Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Brisbane-based singer-songwriter, Harry Phillips has released an accompanying music video to his current single, 'Unexpected' (which was recently added to The A List with Kyle & Jackie O, and is currently #2 on triple j Unearthed).

A seductively quaint indie-pop ballad focused on unrequited love, the 23-year-old turned to music after a sports injury forced him to give up football.

This life-altering moment plunged Harry into a state of depression and anxiety. But when he started writing songs, Harry found music helped his mental health immensely.

"'Unexpected' is a song based on a real life experience I had with unrequited love. All the songs on my forthcoming debut EP revolve around unrequited love, but each song takes it on from a different angle.

"'Unexpected' is the emotional high point of the EP, because it's that point when you confess 'all I ever needed was you'.

"The song was really influenced by the movie '500 Days Of Summer'; I think I watched it and within the hour I had started writing 'Unexpected'."

scenestr is stoked to premiere the music video for 'Unexpected', which was filmed at Shorncliffe Pier.

"Directed by the incomparable Jonathan Trivett from Scape Visuals, this music video was shot around the corner from my house at Shorncliffe Pier in Queensland," Harry, who also volunteers at his local animal shelter and provides pro bono English tutoring for a family of refugees, says.

"The shoot took place at around 5pm to catch the sunset, and the setting and lighting were inspired by the pier scene in the movie 'La La Land'.

"We actually didn't get permission to shut down the pier, so instead my dad just stood at the entrance and told people we were filming, and if they were going to the end of the pier just please don't look at the camera.

"The extras are mostly people from my life. One is friend from acting class, another is a guy called Adam Arcadia who has produced some of my past songs, even my mum makes an appearance."

Harry Phillips opens for Between Kings at The Foundry (Brisbane) 20 July. Harry also plays Scarborough Originals (Brisbane) 3 August.
