Melbourne indie quintet Great ~ Falls explore female freedom and embracing fierce independence on their newest song, 'April's Child'.
The lead single of the group's forthcoming debut EP 'Negatives Into Positives', 'April's Child' was recorded at A Secret Location Sound Recorders in Melbourne with the help of producer Paul Maybury just days prior to the city's first lockdown.Restrained lo-fi jangly guitars intro the song, which slowly gain form as the momentum builds towards a wall of shoegaze noise before the striking vocals of Lillian Albazi enters the mix.
The song then bursts into colour with sultry, dream-like indie fuzz melded to a shimmery, shiny melody that cascades with waves of the aforementioned noodling guitar layers and a rhythm section as smooth as satin that's enriched by gorgeous violin tones.
"This song is an ode to female freedom. A dear friend of mine and I used to have quite regular margarita nights," Lillian says.
"They were wonderfully boozy summer nights with tequila-soaked conversation around art, feminism and navigating moving forwards in our two worlds and careers.
"One particular night we went out for Easter. The moon was so big and bright that evening and I remember turning around and seeing my friend lit up by the lunar light, both of us laughing like jackals at something absurd and thinking how beautiful she was standing there.
"'April's Child''s themes were written about that night. Turning negatives into positives, female empowerment and always finding stability through unity no matter how much the boat may be sinking."
With the song released today, scenestr is thrilled to premiere the 'April's Child' music video. Enjoy.
"The 'April's Child' video clip is the brainchild of director Francisco Mejia Flood," shares the band. "It is an exploration of lush colourisation shot over two days at three locations, a back-beach and beach house in Rye, and an apartment in Melbourne's CBD.
"Francisco had said that he wanted to keep the video fairly ambiguous so people could imprint their own meaning onto the song and its accompanying visuals.
"We wanted the focus of this video clip to be predominantly about the contrast between the black and white footage, the colourisation of this footage and the atmosphere created by the locations.
"The clip opens with a mock photoshoot in black and white and then as the band kicks in, the video clip bursts open with colour.
"As the song unfurls, the video drifts between vivid colour and sharp black and white. The instrumental coda of the song is punctuated by frantic black and white shots with the viewer left contemplating the frames as an afterthought."
