Premiere: Watch Duxie Franklin's New Music Video 'Kitschy Coo'

Duxie Franklin is a Melbourne-based singer-songwriter.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Melbourne-based, multi-genre singer-songwriter, Duxie Franklin's newest release is the quirkily cheeky 'Kitschy Coo' – a little bop to pick yourself up after indulging in a misguided crush.

A prowling guitar opens 'Kitschy Coo', bordering on menacing that quickly dissolves as Duxie's dreamy yet zany voice sings about making a fool of herself to attract the attention of an unworthy suitor.

A soulful almost playful alt-rock groove builds with spacious but buoyant drums and noodling, delightful bass flourishes, the song incorporating elements of funky country, bluesy pop, and alternative noir, mingling together for a cruisy yet intoxicating blend.

"'Kitschy Coo' was written about an experience of being foolishly infatuated with someone," shares Duxie.

"To this person, you may not exist, or you may even just be somebody who they take for granted as they step over you on their way to newer things.

"The song serves as a good wake-up call if you're the one allowing yourself to be made a fool of!"

Ahead of the song's release tomorrow (22 September), scenestr is delighted to premiere the 'Kitschy Coo' music video, which features Duxie joined by fellow Melbourne creative and skater Claire Browne for an offbeat and at times silly choreographed dance depicting the song's lyrics. Enjoy.

"The music video was choreographed in collaboration with the exceptionally talented skater/ dancer Claire Browne," Duxie says.

"There was something quirky and eccentric in the groove and the lyrics that inspired the unconventional choreography we used, and we had lots of fun exploring how far we could take it. I wanted to depict the absurdity of this two-person tango in a (hopefully!) visually iconic way."

Next month, Duxie and her band, Long Lost Texan Uncles, will play a local launch show at Shotkickers (15 October) alongside Crumbe, 2 Inch Tape and Fawkner Walking Society.

"Crumbe are launching their new album and a whole bunch of acts recorded at Room 29 Records are getting together to celebrate," Duxie adds.

"2 Inch Tape and Fawkner Walking Society are also launching new music. For myself and my Long Lost Texan Uncles, we'll be celebrating 'Kitschy Coo', which will be freshly released a few weeks before. So come along and join the party."
