Acid shoegaze meets lo-fi garage psych-punk; welcome to the latest offering from Brisbane trio Dream Dali in the form of their new album single 'Wandering'.
A pounding, chugging rhythmic drum pattern opens 'Wandering' (which will feature on the band's debut album, 'Letters From The Light', that's due 28 October) with lashes of dreamy, sci-fi electronic synth washes before the rugged yet sublime-sounding vocals of Aldous Emerson enter the fray.Add crunchy, fuzzy guitars, before a finish coat of stylish darkwave, warped electronica/ white noise is applied and Dream Dali have manufactured an indie belter worthy of their influences (Radiohead, The Cure, The Flaming Lips).
"I wanted to write a song floating the chords around the bassline that was more energetic than past songs," Aldous says.
"Lyrically, I wanted to explore how you can be in a dark place but still push through with perseverance, whilst also looking into what is contentment."
Ahead of the song's release tomorrow, scenestr is stoked to premiere the music video for 'Wandering' today. Enjoy.
Renowned for their trance-inducing live performances, the clip employs Dream Dali's use of flashing white lights and noir-esque imagery to create a monochrome psych-out onscreen.
"'Wandering' draws influences from '80s new wave and '90s alternative rock such as Radiohead, The Cure, Neu! and The Flaming Lips," adds Aldous.
"The song was turned around very quickly from start to finish, as I wanted it to be very liquid in its creativity.
"I was very inspired by watching the new Beatles documentary and seeing how fluid they were with their creations. I felt they allow ideas to breathe and grow organically without much fear.
"'Wandering' was created with the same intent of non judgement in the creation process and letting the song show me where it wants to go.
"Similarly I did the same with the lyrics, seeing what words would come out as I would riff over the top, forming a theme. I feel there's some connection to the subconscious creating this way."
Dream Dali play The Tomcat (Brisbane) 6 October. 'Letters From The Light' will be released 28 October.
