Indigenous group DEM MOB's latest creation is the empowering and vivid 'I'll Get By'.
A sonic beacon of hope, 'I'll Get By' was written around the personal stories of members Elisha, Jontae, and Basso, alongside Matt, as they relocated to Adelaide from the APY lands in northern South Australia, amidst an increased following and industry recognition (winners of five awards at 2023 South Australian Music Awards).Evocative, rich strings create a lush pop landscape before the strikingly vibrant opening vocals create a sense of optimism, offering guidance to those battling negative self-thoughts, the repetitive line: "Only I can save me," building a mesmerising vibe.
The clean, poppier vocals are a transition for the group, influenced and inspired by the melodic styles of The Weeknd, J Cole and Michael Jackson. The group's grimy hip hop flavours are still nourished with a couple of verses featuring authoritative, authentic flows, the striking yet brooding raps fuelling self-confidence.
Recorded in their home studio, the creation of 'I'll Get By' was a spontaneous burst of creative synergy, completed in under 24 hours before being mixed by Luke Million and mastering by Andre Eremin. In the words of Jontae: "By constant self-development and self-control you can develop greatness of character."
Ahead of the song's release tomorrow (29 August), today scenestr is thrilled to premiere the music video for 'I'll Get By'. Enjoy.
Filmed in black+white, the video (that was directed by the talented Natasha Wanganeen with Maxx Corkindale as the director of photography) bursts into colour near the end of the clip, representing their journey from hardship to empowerment.
"We are really pumped to finally share this song with the people," shares DEM MOB. "This song is important message for anyone who is yet to take responsibility for their own destiny.
"At the end of the day, we can blame anyone for why we are struggling but that doesn't mean they're gonna fix it; it's up to ourselves as individuals to make our own lives better and only us. 'I'll Get By' represents a symbol of hope and a bridge for a better future through self determination.
"So blessed to once again work with Natasha Wanganeen directing alongside Maxx Corkindale and Shannon Dowling; that crew always makes the filming process a vibe."
Next week DEM MOB will be in Brisbane showcasing at BIGSOUND: Made In SA @ The Outpost 4 September and La La Land 5 September.
