The new single from Brisbane duo Daylight Ghosts is a building ballad driven by a melancholic acoustic guitar and bittersweet lyrics about making the most of life.
‘Golden Hour’ is one of the first songs that singer-songwriter Adam Dawe and composer/guitarist Karl O’Shea completed together, as a duo.
“‘Golden Hour’ is a song about beautiful moments and the cruel realisation that they have to inevitably end” vocalist/lyricist Adam Dawe says. “It's a personal reminder to make the most of the moments as they all have an expiry date and nothing lasts forever. To enjoy the last rays of light before the sun inevitably sets for the day.”
“I remember it was the first piece of music for this project that provoked a strong reaction from me and inspired me to start writing and it set the tone for the rest of the songs to follow. It tends to receive a strong reaction when we play it live as well, so whatever magic is there, we hope we've captured it in the recording.”
Dropping alongside ‘Golden Hour’ is its equally moody music video – a video scenestr is amped to be premiering today. Check it out below.
The video could be described as an abstract death ritual following an unseen, unexplained incident. It features Kristian Šantić, Emma Langfield and Jade Brider as ‘crow dancers’, who act as conduits to ‘the other side’. . . Unless of course, you view them as mere bystanders filtered through Karl and Adam’s dying delusions.
“The concept of the music video somehow hatched in my brain near fully-formed, something I wish would happen a lot more often!” Karl says. “I knew I didn’t simply want to do a standard performance video and the visuals needed to not only convey the concept but also to give the viewer a better idea of who the band is without spelling everything out.
“Adam and I are very lucky that we could work with Rhys [Tyack, Director], Kristian, Emma and Jade who understood the concept very quickly and required very little direction. Despite the dark and morbid visuals, it was an absolute joy to create.”
‘Golden Hour’ is officially released on 4 March.
