Australian folk-blues troubadour Andrew Barnum is back with another single from his most recent album 'Dear Ancestor'.
The new cut is 'Constitution', an upbeat, soulful garage-rock number pairing simple yet driving drums and angular guitars with psychedelic flourishes throughout.Add Barnum's gravely vocals reminiscent of Dylan and Leonard Cohen, plus lyrics calling for a personal revolution – you have an instant folk-rock anthem for 2020.
"'Constitution' was inspired by a Memphis soul/ R&B style riff with a straight-ahead rock beat from drummer Lucius Culliton, and angular, ascending electric guitar figures from Boris Hunt. It's a marching, rockin' anthem. A call to revolution," Andrew declares.
"The lyrics are inspired by a sense of escape. We are all made of principles and experiences. A child at play, a nomad in a drain of despair. Then rebellion, and a timely rescue. Are you game to renew your own personal constitution, and fly the flag of freedom?"
Once again teaming with the students from Billy Blue College, scenestr is stoked to premiere the music video for 'Constitution' today. Enjoy.
"The video clip was a second collaboration with students from Billy Blue College," begins Barnum.
"The creative direction was based on the juxtaposition of playful youth, dark isolation, a spark of rebellion, and the elation of escaping.
"Thanks to director Christine Kemeny for a great central concept, script, production co-ordination and editing.
"And her colleagues Michael Traish and Austin Lancaster Sykes (who played the guitarist nomad), with Yi Ye and Kieran Sie (other nomads and technical assistance).
"All the footage was shot in two locations: a drain in Sydney, and a farm on the South Coast of NSW.
"The star of the clip is Solomon Hutchinson (Boy); special thanks to his parents Lilli and Tim, and their younger son Zac for being such a generous part of the production. Also to co-Art Director/ Designer Lissa Barnum and BB educator Andy Marsh."
