Premiere: Watch AMAR.'s New Music Video 'GRADUATE'

AMAR. is a Brisbane-based rapper.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A young Brisbane rapper quickly gaining plaudits locally, AMAR. has emerged from a short hiatus with a bag of new tunes, the first single being 'GRADUATE'.

Influenced by the likes of the late XXXTENTACION, Don Toliver, Travis Scott and Drake, AMAR.'s style is geared toward the emo-Soundcloud rap spectrum.

The moniker of Amar Garbo, AMAR. has been in the studio collaborating with producers such as Khi'leb, Baby Prince, Mitch Paulsen, Wy'es and Liam Thomas.

After releasing his 'SNAKES' single last year, 'GRADUATE' is a tale about escaping from a troubled past by forging creative pathways.

"A lot of influence within the song came from my real life; growing up where I grew up I would get into a lot of trouble," AMAR. says.

"Music was kinda that escape. Within the song I mention history with my ex-girlfriend, my friends that are currently locked up etc."

Latin horns introduce the jam that's quickly dominated by heavy, dank, 808-flavoured trap beats with AMAR. laying down a menacing flow that's half battle cry, half celebratory. The song trails out with an officious-sounding PA droning on about a nondescript warning.

Ahead of the song's release tomorrow (23 February), scenestr is amped to premiere the 'GRADUATE' music video today. Enjoy.

"'GRADUATE' wasn't really planned ahead," adds AMAR. "I was always close with my producer past music, that's like my brother. So he came to my high school graduation; after I didn't really wanna grab lunch with anyone, kinda just wanted to lock in so we just went to the studio.

"As my producer Wy'es was cooking ideas – I told him to go for something big, this is my first song in the real world. It took us about three hours and the song itself was done.

"The recording process wasn't all easy though; the amount of times that the programme completely shutdown or would not catch any audio was the most annoying thing.

"I remember one specific memory – I was friends with a lot of Islanders in high school and they blessed me with a necklace full of sweeties. . . Wy'es ate almost all of them."
