American singer-songwriter and pianist, Alan Chang's newest single 'Natalie Explain' is an '80s styled, mellow jazzy-pop ballad about deluded, one-sided love.
Best known as the musical director and pianist to Michael Bublé (Chang co-wrote Bublé hits 'Home' and 'Haven't Met You Yet') for 19 years (2003-2022), it was when Chang reached his 40th birthday in 2019 that the pull to explore his own songwriting led him to start recording songs for his forthcoming debut album, 'Check Please'.Written from the perspective of a man believing his own imagination and creating a fanciful storyline that his beloved is also madly in love with him, 'Natalie Explain' is the second single to feature on 'Check Please'.
"'Natalie Explain' was a fun exercise to write about a fictional character and try and imagine myself as a delusional potential lover," shares Alan.
"Then I realised that I've been him at some point of my life. Let's say elementary school."
Released last month, today scenestr is thrilled to premiere the 'Natalie Explain' music video that finds Chang's fictionalised character meeting his 'beloved' with a series of awkward exchanges resulting.
Alongside chiming, mellifluous piano chords, nonchalantly cruisy drum patterns, and Chang's rhythmically pleasant vocals, 'Natalie Explain' also features hypnotically sexy saxophone tones courtesy of Dave Koz.
"Dave Koz was someone who I wanted to work with for years. We have a mutual friend who tried to connect us years ago but it took the right song to make it happen."
Stay tuned for Chang's next single release later in July.
