Premiere: Stream Whiskey Jack's New Single 'One Track Mind'

Whiskey Jack is a singer-songwriter from Perth.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A new voice in Australian indie folk, alt. country, Western Australia artist Whiskey Jack's newest release, 'One Track Mind', showcases the singer-songwriter's capacity to connect listeners with his poetic storytelling.

Last year, Whiskey Jack aka Jack Dacheff released his debut EP 'Haystacks', performed at Nannup Music Festival and toured the north and south regions of Western Australia.

2024 has already seen Jack release previous single 'Shepherds Warning', another slice of sparkly Australiana-flavoured country. Now arrives 'One Track Mind'.

A gorgeously delicious, richly emotive guitar riff that glistens and glimmers is married to Jack's unique vocals (one part Marlboro Man, one part laconic Aussie drawl creating a pleasant, rustic charm).

Dusty, shimmering drums and a bassline more relaxed than a sloth combine to lay a solid foundation, the melody enveloping the senses like a well-worn cardigan-flannelette shirt.

This is sublime indie folk, alt country (akin to Leon Bridges, Michael Kiwanuka, and Khruangbin) that's soul-enriching, the earthy tones and warm, analogue feels circling like a contented cat repositioning itself for pats.

"'One Track Mind' is a window into the psyche, navigating through social anxiety without a road map," shares Jack. "It's a song about overthinking and getting lost on a circular road of thought loops that don't serve you in the end.

"There's a tension between the present moment – being conscious and aware of your thoughts and feelings, and the unconscious autopilot – getting carried away or stuck thinking about future scenarios or replaying past experiences. Sometimes we can be led astray."

Ahead of the song's release tomorrow (15 March), scenestr is thrilled to premiere 'One Track Mind' today. Enjoy.

Joining Dacheff on the track is Jack Hill brushing the snare, producer Dylan Ollivierre (The Money War) on bass and electric guitar, Jy-Perry Banks on pedal steel and the gentle backing vocals from Carmen Ollivierre (The Money War).

"This was the first song Dylan and I worked on together," Jack says. "I sent him a rough voice memo demo after a coffee catch-up, and he was keen to collaborate.

"I loved working with Dylan on 'One Track Mind'; he's got a real talent for building songs and the bones of this track provided a starting point for us to create a fuller sound on the recording.

"Jack Hill came in at the start of the studio session, and the three of us workshopped sounds and talked about the vibe we wanted to convey with the drums (Jack), bass and electric guitar (Dylan) and pedal steel (Jy-Perry Banks). Carmen Ollivierre gave us the dreamy backing vocals, elevating the song and adding something special."

Whiskey Jack plays Honky Tonk (Fremantle) on 5 April.
