London-born, Brisbane-based singer-songwriter Alex Moran will soon release his debut solo album, '1984', under the alias/band name The Seven Deadly Sins.

The Seven Deadly Sins was Alex's first band back in Edinburgh. It was formed in 2008, and now in 2023 it comes back to life – in the form of ten new songs. '1984' is an entirely self-funded project by Alex.

“I was born in London, grew up in my teen years in different parts of Australia, spent over ten years living in Edinburgh, Scotland where I gained quite a lot of positive press, airplay and professional live support shows – as well as worked with a number of industry producers with my two bands Quiet As A Mouse and The Seven Deadly Sins,” Alex says.

“And just over 4 years ago I returned to live and settled back in Brisbane. And this album '1984' was recorded locally in Capalaba and I collaborated with a number of music friends in the recording of the album.”

Today, scenestr is super excited to share the new single 'Love Ain't A Sin', from The Seven Deadly Sins' upcoming album, before its official release. The melancholy, atmospheric track is boosted by the vibes of its lyric video, both of which you can check out now.

The lyric video is a still skyline view of Brisbane city at sunset, from the Mount Coot-tha lookout. It was shot and edited by Alex.

Lyrically, the track sees Alex pining for someone. “Love ain't a sin, honey it means everything. . . One day I know I'll win,” he sings in the chorus. The verses make reference to the classic “loves me, loves me not” game involving picking the petals from a flower.

“The songs verse was influenced by an old Whiskeytown (Ryan Adams' first major band) song and the chorus is a mix of melancholy and romance,” Alex says. “I liked turning the word 'sin' into something beautiful and romantic, turning the word 'sin' on its head. I thought, what could be the opposite of The Seven Deadly Sins? Love.”

“I wanted the verse to have a lo-fi sound and then to open up in the chorus to give it a more widescreen pop feel and for the song to gradually build throughout.”

The Seven Deadly Sins' debut album '1984' is released 21 April.
