Premiere: Stream Taylor Pfeiffer's New Single 'Mind Wide Open'

Adelaide musician Taylor Pfeiffer returns with the indie Americana gem 'Mind Wide Open'.
National Music Editor, based in Brisbane, Australia.
'Passionate about true crime docos, the Swannies, golf and sleep, I’ve been writing about music for 20-plus years. What I’ve learnt? There’s two types of music – good and bad.’

A recent 2020 Top Ten Star Maker finalist in Tamworth, Adelaide's emerging and talented songwriter and musician, Taylor Pfeiffer returns with her first foray into the indie world of Americana with new single, the self-penned 'Mind Wide Open'.

The track features Taylor's killer, sultry vocals that are drizzled in stark, biting lyrics ("You weren't here to wake me / Now it's harder to get out of bed") with a meandering Americana-styled start that really kicks in with an alt.country noir feel throughout.

"The idea started with a catchy hook for the lyric 'I don't wanna be wrong'; I just couldn't get it out of my head," Taylor says.

"I wrote a story tracing back to that one line, of a partner leaving. But instead of accepting this, building false hopes, coming up with every excuse for it not to be real. It's a common feeling, not wanting something to end."

Ahead of the song's release on Friday (7 February), scenestr is elated to share an exclusive stream of 'Mind Wide Open' with you today. Enjoy.

The genesis for 'Mind Wide Open' began after Pfeiffer spent time in the US in 2018 and 2019; she played at Béla Fleck's Blue Ridge Banjo Camp in North Carolina as well as performing on Nashville's Music City Roots radio show.

"I travelled to Nashville, spending a combined nine weeks songwriting and performing and attending conferences, such as AmericanaFest.

"It was during AmericanaFest that I found my true calling – writing and performing indie Americana music.

"I chose to record 'Mind Wide Open' with multi-instrumentalist Michael Muchow, in Brisbane, and it was such a creative atmosphere.

"We played all instruments on the track between us both, with the exception of drums. I had a clear vision of the arrangement and what I wanted each instrument to play, so I am so proud of the final project."
