Still fresh-faced to the scene, Gold Coast duo Super Ghost's debut EP 'Left For Dust' showcases a young band coming into their own.
Built off a foundation of indie rock, the pair of Hudson MacMahon and Alexander Shoesmith aren't afraid to colour outside the lines, adding elements of 'crisp indie-pop undertones, surf-rock swells and elements of spaghetti western sauve' to the mix."'Left For Dust' was about doing something new," Super Ghost says. "We have a diverse music taste across a plethora of genres, so we wanted to incorporate elements of these genres while making music people can vibe with.
"The last ten months for Super Ghost has been a huge journey for the band and we are super excited to finally share our music with everyone. 'Left For Dust' has quite a variety of sounds, but it still feels cohesive."
Ahead of the EP's release tomorrow (29 October), scenestr is thrilled to premiere 'Left For Dust' today. Enjoy.
An atmospheric dark pop instrumental starts the opening track 'Lullaby' that quickly morphs into a sizzling progressive rock number, with hearty garage-surf rock influences bleeding into the mix as well.
The work of Ennio Morricone comes to the fore on 'Graceless', the spaghetti western resonance not overshadowing the sprawling dark rock overtones flooding the structure of the song.
'Preserved' offers the most surf-rock feel on the EP, the electric guitar guiding hips and feet towards the dance floor. The lads lean into their punk feels on 'Haze', the punchy guitars demanding your attention before 'Vertex' takes the baton, running ahead with slinky bass riffs complemented by noodling guitar leads.
Final track (and the EP's lead single) 'Waiting List' slows the paces, with a languid yet moody waltz that's one part The Dears, another part Children Collide.
"'Left For Dust' aims to explore themes of liminal spaces, illogical social customs and anxieties that coincide with the human rat race," adds Super Ghost.
"We consciously borrowed elements of spaghetti western soundtracks, surf music, carnival music and disco to create a unique spin on alternative rock."
