Premiere: Stream Sophie Lilah's New Single 'Content But I Find'

Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

An emerging folk-pop artist from Fremantle who's based in Perth, Sophie Lilah's second single of 2024 continues to stamp the 18 year old as an incredible talent.

A musician inspired by a diverse set of influences – ranging from Clairo, Radiohead, BANKS, and Julia Jacklin – 'Content But I Find' is the next chapter Lilah is sharing from her forthcoming debut EP 'Fear/Instinct' (released 16 August).

The follow-up to the sublime 'Daydream' single, 'Content But I Find' is a delightful and beautiful acoustic number as Sophie shares her shades of shoegazey feels.

A trance-like reverie of reflective thoughts encased in a mellow, dream-pop ballad with shimmering drums rolls, Sophie's lilting, fragile vocals offer an intrinsic strength as she muses about a failed friendship.

"I wrote this when I was on a beautiful holiday in Indonesia with my family. I felt like I should have been extremely happy, everything was perfect. However, I spent most of the time reflecting on a friendship in my life that had just fallen apart and processing that experience."

Ahead of the song's release tomorrow (12 July), scenestr is thrilled to premiere 'Content But I Find' today. Enjoy.

"I was sitting on a daybed by the pool, in the sun, just messing around on my nylon mini guitar," adds Sophie, discussing the moment she first began piecing together 'Content But I Find'. "I think the pretty sounding guitar part was inspired by the stunning tropical landscape that I was surrounded by.

"I didn't really have much of a creative vision or direction at the time of writing the song, I just let it form naturally. However, I was getting into a bit of dream-pop/ shoegaze genres at the time and some artists I was listening to were Weyes Blood, Men I Trust, Alice Pheobe Lou and Beach House."

Next week (19 July) Sophie will perform live with her band at The Bird in Northbridge (Perth) as a support act for fellow young Perth talents Increment (at their 'Everything Stays The Same' EP launch) alongside Daisy Park and Foothead.

"I recorded this song during the start of 2024 summer at 156 Studios in Northbridge with producer and sound engineer Calvin Bennett. We got the song done in one session as it is quite short and we were on the same page about it," Sophie says.
