Premiere: Stream Sky Eater's New Single 'Sentimental'

Sky Eater are a trip-hop band based in Northern Rivers.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A self-styled mermaid trip-hop band based in the hinterland behind Byron Bay, Sky Eater are led by Chelsea Skyeater who wields keys, flute and sax to accompany her dubbed-out vocals.

Chelsea is joined by dub soldier TK Bassdread and his artillery of bass, beats, vocals and of course more live dubs alongside a dreamy-sounding all-female horn section Elena Marcigot (MsEleneous) and Aya Samukawa (Pineapple Lazer) supplying lush layers of sax, clarinet and trumpet.

With each band member born in a different country – Australia, UK, Italy and Japan – Sky Eater are "about creating the best possible live experience using sampled/programmed electronic beats and all the bells and whistles of new tech that we can find".

Their latest creation is 'Sentimental', the third release from our upcoming album 'SUBmerged'.

A luscious, tranquil, piano-flavoured trip-hop beat opens the song as Chelsea coos seductively. Then the bassline drops in with a freshness before the smooth yet hypnotically sensual brass horns sound, transporting you to a mystical landscape at the end of the world.

The song then gently weaves through this chilled, relaxed soundscape that's equal parts nostalgic and soul cleansing. 'Sentimental' will appeal to fans of Salmonella Dub, Morcheeba, Asian Dub Foundation, Mad Professor, and Lamb.

Ahead of the song's release tomorrow (2 June), scenestr is thrilled to premiere 'Sentimental' today. Enjoy.

"The song was heavily inspired by '90s trip-hop vibes (eg. Massive Attack), with a smidge of The Cure driving that influence," shares Chelsea.

"It was written during a massive period of letting go – leaving a long-term relationship (domestic violence situation) and that bittersweet feeling of love lost mixed with the knowing that the breakup had to happen.

"It's been waiting in the Sky Eater archives for a few years and we are stoked that it made it onto our new album 'SUBmerged', which will be released later this year."
