Melbourne indie rock, alt-pop band SILT have spent the first half of the year bunkered down at Ginger Studios with producer Jimi Lloyd-Wyatt.
The trio have been working on new material, adding to the four singles they've released previously since forming in 2019 with a debut EP in the works with a release planned towards the end of the year.In the meantime, SILT are ready to take the covers off the first single from that future body of work, with the delicate yet big-sounding 'I Always Need A Break', a track about taking back the power after being made to feel small.
Moody, stark, raw, and at times powerful production is backed by the fragile yet earthy vocals of Jess Polain alongside breathy chants and rolling drums.
As the song builds towards a sensory explosion, arpeggiating and modulating synths, overdriven guitars and Polain's commanding presence give way to a simmering-hot '90s guitar riff that adds instant sizzle, the track's pace quickening.
Ahead of the song's release on Friday (25 June), scenestr is stoked to premiere 'I Always Need A Break' today. Enjoy.
"'I Always Need A Break' holds onto the apathy that some relationships bring out in us," Jess Polain says.
"You know from experience that certain conversations will only take you down a difficult road, so you choose the path of least resistance but you're left feeling unheard and unsatisfied.
"Writing this song was a new experience for me. Josh had written a series of guitar parts, which ended up being the heart of this song, and I was inspired to put lyrics and melody over them.
"It was really fun to learn that we can write in this way – and achieve such a different sound to our past releases."
