Sydney indie singer-songwriter Sarah Yagki's latest release, 'Sick Of You', is her most poppy track yet, and the first song she collaborated with Loretta band member Nico Scali.
Disheartened, dispirited vocals share a tale of one-sided relationship woe as Sarah labours the point with melancholic lyrics that depict the emotional maltreatment felt. That darkened energy is offset by bright, lush, stylised pop production that beams an effervescent ball of sparkly pep into the melody, with retro '80s vibe seeping through adding a glowing sheen of fierce independence.
"'Sick Of You' is heavily influenced by a bright indie sound that I haven't previously explored," shares Sarah. "I wanted to give the song an uplifting energy against quite melancholic lyrics.
"This track is the most pop-sounding track to date and will be the last before my next few tracks head into a darker pop-rock sound."
Ahead of the song's release next week (4 November), scenestr is thrilled to premiere 'Sick Of You' today. Enjoy.
"The lyrical inspiration especially on that last line, 'I'm sick of not being sick of you', is through the film '10 Things I Hate About You'," adds Sarah.
"In one of the final scenes where she is reading the poem about not hating the other character, but rather hates the fact that she still has feelings towards him.
"This really grabs the meaning of the song and I was inspired by that to include an idea of that in the track."
