A rustic, meandering folk song, Sydney singer-songwriter Rita B is ready to drop her second single of 2021 – 'Travel Companion'.
An acoustic track that will appeal to listeners of Stella Donnelly and Julia Jacklin, 'Travel Companion' offers touching lyrics that paint a fragile picture of escapism, isolation, and loneliness.'I'm thinking about marrying / The next person who is nice / So that I can have my own travel companion.'
"'Travel Companion' is a song that explores isolation, loneliness and safety as a woman in those spaces, in particular, while travelling," Rita says.
"It's a relatively stripped-back (singer-songwriter) track – not played with the band. Layers of sound, such as backing vocals and violin are added to create a melancholy, dream-like vibe as the track progresses."
Ahead of its release on Wednesday (1 September), scenestr is thrilled to premiere 'Travel Companion' today. Enjoy.
"I wanted to write something folk/ singer songwriter-esque, with a lyrical story accompanied by a simple guitar arrangement," Rita adds.
"I came up with the chord progression first, which eventually led to the idea around travelling on the road.
"I was influenced by moments in my life where I had been travelling alone for gigs and the lyrics are a reflection upon those experiences."
