With influences ranging from Wavves and Jack White to The Doors, Reel Tapes have spent the past couple of years garnering a dedicated following around Melbourne's music scene with an indie-rock sound they promise will 'get you dancing so quickly that you'll forget how dorky their members look'.
Reel Tapes' newest release is titled 'Deep Space' and offers a generous slice of funk-driven, groove rock. Give it a spin and try not to smile. It's not possible.
There are two Liams in the band who collaboratively write the bands songs. "It took us a long time to perfect 'Deep Space'," Liam A explains.
"I remember writing the riff over three years ago, but we could never figure out how to fit it all together. This song was like a jigsaw puzzle to write and I'm not very good at jigsaw puzzles, so this song definitely took a long time to brew. Now though, we couldn't be happier with the end result."
Liam M formulated the lyrics for the song. "I remember writing some of the lyrics while I was standing outside the Forum one night, to see Esperanza Spalding play.
"I was surrounded by these high walls and I feel like they made an impression on me. This idea of an unrealistic sense of desire became the main idea for the song; and the Forum, the image of a wolf chasing the moon and imagining trying to run faster than your own thoughts all got sucked into it as well."
