A singer-songwriter who creates 'dreamy, melodic, moonlit folk-rock', Canberra-based indie artist Nicholas Costello's newest release is 'Doubt Grows'.
A track that lyrically follows a relationship that breaks down, melodically Costello has crafted a joyous, uplifting ballad that hearts hard the feels of '70s flavoured alt country, indie folk. It's a contemplative ditty you'll find hard not to shoulder-jig along to, the song's words acting like a guardian of sorts for a better future-self as Nicholas' influences (think Nick Drake, The National, Hozier, Iron & Wine) seep through the golden tones.
"'Doubt Grows' was written about the rapid deterioration of a long-term relationship back in 2020, and is a snapshot of the blinkered insularity of my life at that time in spite of the extraordinary events and changes that were occurring in the outside world," shares Costello.
Ahead of the song's release tomorrow (20 May), scenestr is thrilled to premiere 'Doubt Grows' today. Enjoy.
"Stylistically, this song reminds me of a blend of Arcade Fire and a '70s band called Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah," adds Nicholas.
Nicholas Costello and his band play Lazy Bones Lounge (Sydney) 5 June.
