Premiere: Stream Miles Recommends' New Single 'Keep It Warm'

Melbourne band Miles Recommends return with new single, 'Keep It Warm'.
National Music Editor, based in Brisbane, Australia.
'Passionate about true crime docos, the Swannies, golf and sleep, I’ve been writing about music for 20-plus years. What I’ve learnt? There’s two types of music – good and bad.’

A band formed in the middle of conflict, Miles Recommends is the brainchild of Melbourne folk singer-songwriters, music producers and social critics Des Atkinson and Lou Cadell.

First coming together in Bangkok (where Des work for the UN) circa 2014, and with a complete band now in tow, Miles Recommends are back with new single 'Keep It Warm'.

A rollicking folk-punk number that starts off as a meandering alt. country-rock ballad before it crescendos into a blazin', head-banging, psych-groove monster, it's gunna wear a hole in your shoe from the toe-tapping.

"'Keep It Warm' came about in the standard fashion for us, me noodling on guitar or keyboard and trying to get Lou to hum along," Des says.

"If she starts humming, we're onto something! I'll be the first to admit I'm not the world's greatest musician, so songs pretty much happen whenever I experiment with something new.

"That day it was a Celtic tuning (called DADGAD) that's also used in rock and folk music ('Kashmir' by Led Zeppelin is a notable example). DADGAD has such an evocative sound that the basic song and melody just kinda fell out pretty quick."

Ahead of the song's release tomorrow, we're pumped to premiere an exclusive stream of 'Keep It Warm' today. So pop the kettle on, settle back and enjoy. Don't forget a couple of Arnotts scotch fingers too!

“The great thing about this song is that the melody just clicked with a 'call and response' vibe, so instead of debating who got to sing we decided we both would," adds Lou.

"And we've wanted to use a dramatic tempo transition in a song for ages, which had never worked previously, but we put it in 'Keep It Warm' [and] bingo!"

"We took the idea to the rest of the guys in the band," continues Des. "We'd been playing around with Justin (bassist) using an organ emulator pedal on some song ideas – and with this song it just sounded kooky and sick."

Miles Recommends plays Bowlo Palooza at Thornbury Bowls Club (Melbourne) Saturday 12 October with Frank Bell and Mission Brown.
