Almost two years removed from their last single release, Brisbane dark DIY lords Mecha Mecha return with another brooding alternative rock song, 'Mourning In The Evening'.

A woeful tale built on the rubble of a seminal break-up, a dark, menacing, industrial sonic landscape creeps up, the tones bruised.

Yet there's a sullen beauty that shimmers as the incessant drumming slowly builds in intensity, the humming and intake of breath of singer Walter Webb adding to the sorrowful rhythm, the gloom hanging like misty fog.

The violin strings and piano complete the downcast atmosphere, the disconsolation all but seeping through the speakers, Walter's morose vocals building the mental pangs of grief.

"Esoterically, it's just a comment on how life often seems to hit us with everything in one go, and we push on, the silver lining of rain clouds acting as a lighthouse that guides you through whatever storm it is you're traversing," Walter says, "but lyrically, it's just a sad song about the worst part of a break-up."

It's deep, dark and foreboding; encapsulating the feeling of futility and crestfallen emotions that lurk when experiencing the break-up of a long-term relationship. The song's rawness hints at the likes of '90s legends Placebo, Radiohead and Stone Temple Pilots, a maelstrom of sadness simmering like a scab that won't heal.

"It's a song about grieving, which was written well before our Grandma passed away on Christmas Day, but we'd like to dedicate the song to her," drummer Angelo Webb says.

Ahead of the song's release tomorrow (20 February), today scenestr is amped to premiere 'Mourning In The Evening' (alongside its demo track 'The Worst Dream') today. Enjoy.

"It's really straight down the line Mecha Mecha; real strings, acoustic piano playing, bass doing guitar stuff, three-part vocals," adds Walt. "I had someone actually come into one of the two guitar stores I work at, to tell me how excited they were for the song, which is nice. It's easy to forget people care and you aren't just doing it for yourself.

"Though we aren't doing a music video this time. A music video, in this economy?!?! We worked with Brock Weston, the drummer from Bugs, who produced the track and really workshopped the drums with Ange."

Mecha Mecha is set to perform with The Wish Fufilled and Whitt's End at The Cave Inn in Woolloongabba (Brisbane) on 20 February.

The band will also release the demo version of 'Mourning In The Evening' tomorrow, titled 'The Worst Dream'. You can stream it first today, though.
