Sydney band Magnus are on the precipice of releasing their second album, titled 'Detachment'.
The brainchild of Arne Heeres, the band was founded in 2012 and released their self-titled debut album in 2016.Since then, Arne has added Cog drummer Lucius Borich to the mix and had five-time, ARIA Award-winning producer-engineer Paul McKercher aboard to work on 'Detachment'. "The album as a whole is really in its own style, every song is slightly different," Arne told us last year.
"Somebody like Paul McKercher as a producer, sitting behind the desk, it's like having a good coach on a basketball team," he adds.
"It just brings some kind of stability to it and when you're recording and you're playing the music, it's very different than sitting behind the desk and listening to it."
With flashes of everything from The Mars Volta, QOSTA and Nirvana, even The Doors, Magnus have created an epic album with 'Detachment' that requires multiple listens.
Alongside Paul McKercher, Arne also used the talents of Grammy winners Bob Clearmountin (Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, The Preatures) and Brian Gardner (Queens Of The Stone Age's 'Songs For The Deaf') who worked on the new album.
"The album title works on two different levels; in general my gripe with there being a bigger level of detachment between people as well as between them and their environment," offers Arne.
"I often long for living in a long gone, simpler time with less noise surrounding all of us. Something that doesn't pretend to be polished. "I wanted to reflect that in the music, but also in the album art. Both music and album art were recorded on old media; tape and film."
Ahead of the album's release tomorrow (24 April) digitally, scenestr is stoked to premiere 'Detachment' today. Enjoy.
"On a more personal level," Arne adds, "'Detachment' stands for the breaking away from the influences that shaped me growing up.
"The people, their expectations of what your life should be, how you should behave to fit in with whatever group you should be part of. I can't say that I've ever felt like I've fit in with any one or any group, and also haven't been very good at hiding that."
