Sunshine Coast rockers Lost Worlds are ready to release their debut album, 'Fire Fire', tomorrow (22 June), but not before they give scenestr the early heads up with an exclusive stream of the record today.
A musical hybrid of early 2000s garage rock and video game electronica, Lost Worlds is fronted by Lee McRae alongside bass guitarist Baby Blue and current session drummer Kyle Shipton.
"Recording the album was like throwing it all on black," Lee says. "The gamble that doesn't make sense. This could be the only album that we get to make, so we didn't hold anything back.
"Everything apart from the drums was recorded and mixed in my bedroom. In the beginning we attempted to record in a studio with a producer and spent a lot of time and money on a couple songs.
"I didn't like that studio polished sound. By the end of it I felt like the songs lost their soul. I realised that for the music to sound the way I hear it in my head, I'd have to record it myself. I've got no uni degree in producing or sound engineering, but I do know what I want the music to sound like.
"Starting all over again, we recorded a couple songs in my bedroom and tried to do an unbiased comparison. When we heard the bedroom version we thought, 'yup… this is better'. That was our break through. It led us to record a whole album that we're really proud of. Rock & roll doesn't need to sound perfect, but it DOES need the soul.
"Making this album was like therapy for me," continues Lee. "I've been carrying it in my head for a long time now, so I'm looking forward to putting it out and putting my energy into the band's live shows and to keep writing."
