A folk song inspired by Australia's natural environment, Canadian singer-songwriter and poet Laura Lucas latest creation is 'Big Questions'.
The artist from Winnipeg rediscovered her passion for songwriting while spending a year living and studying in Melbourne last year."Coming from the Canadian prairies where winter seems to last forever, living in a warmer climate and being so close to the ocean was truly a dream for me," Laura says.
After years of writing songs for no one but herself to hear, Laura finally decided to record some of them with producer Garrett Kato in his Byron Bay studio.
"Living in Melbourne opened up a whole, new world for me. I got to see so many live gigs and discover so many local artists, and it was the first time I felt like I could share my music.
"One day I got an ad in my email about a show Garrett was playing in Melbourne and I bought a ticket because I knew and liked one of his songs.
"Before the show I was looking into more of his music and found out that he had produced a bunch of Ziggy Alberts' music, as well as multiple other artists that I was already a fan of.
"I had the feeling that if I was ever going to try to do anything with my music then this would be the time.
"So after the show I went up to him and asked if he would want to produce some of my music, and that's how it started."
Ahead of the release tomorrow (21 August) of 'Big Questions', scenestr is thrilled to premiere the song today. Enjoy.
Laura still holds fond memories of her recording experience with Garrett. "I was pretty nervous about going into the studio because I had no idea what I was doing, but recording with Garrett was super chill, and he's such a funny guy so it was just like hanging out.
"We also got to talk about our experiences living in Australia as Canadians and the things we missed (or didn't miss) from back home, which was nice."
Now back in Winnipeg, Laura plans to return to Australia once the COVID troll allows international travel.
