An indie rock act who formed in early 2020 as a solo project called Sartoria, Perth's LANES (fronted by Jacob Sartori) is back with new single 'SAN' – a smooth, luscious, yet angular slice of alternative rock.
It also marks a creative shift for the group, with Jacob now surrounded by a six-piece band bringing his creations to life."Initially, I thought this would be more of a solo singer-songwriter project," begins Jacob, "but once I started playing with a band it just evolved into something more than I ever expected, with each player bringing their own flavour to the project.
"Hence the name change and the move to a very different genre direction."
With a sound that fits somewhere between Eskimo Joe, Snow Patrol and City Calm Down, LANES found 'SAN' a relatively straightforward song to write. "The song was one of those tunes that seemed to write itself," Jacob says.
"From the progression of the melody to the overall structure and arrangement, it only took me about 15 minutes to have a whole song written and ready for demo."
With the song set to drop on Friday (10 September), scenestr is stoked to premiere 'SAN' today. Enjoy.
"I tried to play around with deliberate contradictions and vague, somewhat poetic language in this track," adds Jacob.
"I like it when a song can be mostly subjective, with each person who listens taking something a little different from it.
"I know what I wrote the song about and what it means to me, but it would ruin the experience if I just told everyone what it was about. Better to let them find their own meaning from the song instead."
With a launch show this Friday for 'SAN' and with a debut EP in the works (with a release planned in early 2022), the future is looking bright for LANES. "This project seems to have taken on a sound of its own, which I really dig," confirms Jacob.
"I'm happy to follow it wherever it leads for the moment, as I'm really enjoying the journey.
"This track is definitely a good indicator of what is to come in the near future, but I'm always working on new music and growing our sound, so there is a lot to look forward to."
LANES play Lyric's Underground (Perth) 10 September.
