South Coast singer-songwriter Joe Mungovan's newest release is the delicious sounding 'Like That' – a track infused with Mungovan's indie rock-roots vibes as well as pop melodies to brighten your day.
The song's background provides a snapshot of the upbeat mood Joe has captured on 'Like That'."'Like That' is about a road-trip I went on before COVID hit. A girl I had met in Germany flew to Australia to see me and we travelled up and down the coast in my van.
"We were out in the bush for a week and came back into reception to the news that the German borders were closing. We fanged it back to Sydney airport to get her on a flight home in time."
Ahead of the song's release on Wednesday (27 October), scenestr is thrilled to premiere 'Like That' today. Enjoy.
This year has seen Joe nominated in both the APRA Awards and Golden Guitar Awards as well as releasing previous singles 'You + Me', 'Lemon + Lime', 'Soaking Up The Sunshine' and 'Give Me Your Love'.
Alongside 'Like That', these songs all feature on Joe's debut album 'A Flower In The Weeds' (due 10 November).
Joe recorded the album in the picturesque surrounds of Kangaroo Valley, but had to deal with a couple of natural disasters. "I recorded the majority of the album in Kangaroo Valley. I moved out to the bush and turned a small house into my studio. I would go weeks without seeing any other humans.
"However, I woke up one morning and could barely breathe as the smoke was so thick from the bushfires. I evacuated for a week and fortunately the fires just missed the house.
"I moved back down and then the valley flooded. I lost power for five days and lived by candlelight.
"The house provided me with the time and space to reflect on the past years of touring and life. My [producer] mate Tim Carr [Matt Corby, Julia Stone] helped me put the final touches on the songs and we mixed the album in his bedroom closet."
As lockdown restrictions continue to ease, Joe has a number of intimate gigs planned.
"I initially planned on touring the album with a full band through November and December. The second lockdown hit, I quickly realised that I would have to reschedule those shows, but I still wanted to play some gigs and give people live music.
"The idea of 'Breakfast With Joe' was born. On the week the album drops, I will hit the road and travel up the east coast playing at a different cafe each morning.
"I have chosen some beautiful spaces with big outdoor areas so bring your picnic rug, get your almond latte orders in and enjoy a morning of live music and smashed avo."
Joe showcases a free preview of the new album with his band at Beaches (Wollongong) 29 October.
