The former frontman for Bell Weather Department (2010-2015), Sydney singer-songwriter Jacob Moore will kick-start a second musical act when he releases his debut solo single 'Bad News'.
A spoken-word styled intro with a haunting piano loop and various electronic clicks and beeps in the background makes way for a QOTSA-styled riff that warps into a wobbly electronic bassline at times before Jacob returns with his hypnotic voice (that's perfect to narrate an adult fairytale book just sayin').The track ebbs and flows between these elements, hooking your ears to full attention, the angsty emotions of Moore's personal lyrics oozing through the speakers.
"I'm big believer in using lyrics and music to rid myself of an idea and never think of it again – like a cleanse of the palette," Jacob says.
"Despite being known within my circle of friends as a bit of class clown/ larrikin with a nice-guy attitude, I've endured a lot of pain in life growing up which I tend to shy away from.
"Growing up in Witness Protection, untimely deaths, isolation, multiple divorces, substance abuse, domestic violence etc.
"I've been a victim and on 'the wrong side of the rough stick' for all of the above and more, yet it was me that felt like the bad guy and had the fingers pointed at me for too long. This song is my response to that."
Ahead of the release of 'Bad News' tomorrow (20 May), scenestr is stoked to premiere Moore's debut single today. Enjoy.
The song's stirring, dramatic riff originally began life back in the late naughties; true story as Moore explains.
"The climatic riff in 'Bad News' is quite old but never fully realised – it was initially part of another song played at the first Bell Weather Department jam at a house in Avalon with Julien Crendal on the drums (Zeahorse/ BWD/ Nunchukka Superfly) in 2009. YES! I still have the footage.
"'Bad News' musically was a culmination of about five different songs moulded together.
"Earlier this year, I was considering releasing entirely different versions of 'Bad News' – like a 'choose your adventure' style, but I figured that may be confusing so I'll save that for another release."
