Set to unleash music that will connect emotionally and show off more of his artistry and personality, Jackson Carroll is ready for not just a new summer of shows, but a brand new phase of his career to start.
The Sydney indie-folk artist returns with an EP, 'Name It After Me', that showcases rich hues of earthy, rootsy indie rock and lashings of bluesy folk. "There's been a lot of talking over this collection of songs between myself and Luke. What to include, what not to include, what needs work, what kind of sound we want," Jackson says.
"For me personally, I was worried most about how the songs sounded together; the cohesion of it all. But once you hear them over and over again in different orders, different instances, different situations, I think you figure out that the story and the character behind it all links it together better than any one sound could.
"Or, at least that's how it is for me. There's every possibility I'm overthinking it way too much."
Ahead of the EP's official release on Friday (22 November), scenestr is excited to offer an exclusive stream of 'Name It After Me' today. Enjoy.
"Recording all the songs actually went smoother than I thought it would," continues Jackson. "Again, I think that's a testament to the forethought and pre-planning we did beforehand.
"Luke and I spent pretty much a day going through all the songs, finalising lyrics, seeing if any songs didn't make the cut. We drew from reference tracks, got all the lyrics on paper.
"Basically just tested all the songs against one another to make sure everything we had was strong. That made time in the studio a breeze. We knew more or less what we wanted, so all we really had to do was punch it out a few days at a time.
"Ian took the liberty of playing around in his spare time and sending new mixes every so often, for which I can't thank him enough. If I could take one thing away from the experience, it's the benefits of planning everything out. Which is not a sentiment I'll apply to anything else in my life any time soon.
"I think the EP gives some really nice insights into myself, what I feel, what I want out of life, what I treasure and what I don't.
"There's a nice balance between introspection and a broader narrative that doesn't necessarily apply to me. Which I think was a big motivator for me to push the name of the thing.
"In a way, even if it's not self-titled, the songs on the EP very much have me and my name written all over them. I guess it's my own little joke, but I think it works on a few levels."
'Name It After Me' EP is released 22 November.
