Premiere: Stream Jacket Weather's New Single 'Hollow Passion'

Jacket Weather are an indie group from Sydney.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Sydney's funk groovers Jacket Weather are leaning into their garage rock youth as they chart a new course for the band.

Founded by the members of Groove City to focus on alternative flavours melded to their signature grooves and male vocal harmonies, Jacket Weather have added a fourth member (Jesse Curnow on drums) in what has been a busy 2022 for the group that has seen them release two EPs.

Now Jacket Weather are navigating into new territory as they up the ante on their rock & roll chops with newest single 'Hollow Passion', which is lifted from their next EP 'Fuel Light Glow' (due 2 December).

The song features crunchy, searing guitar riffs soaked in juicy, bluesy-psych tones pared to a rhythm section that's equally smooth yet possesses plenty of sophisticated grunt.

Add crooning, smoky vocals that coo dreamily and Jacket Weather have created a rock & roll jiving beast.

Ahead of the song's release tomorrow (25 November), scenestr is thrilled to premiere 'Hollow Passion' today. Enjoy.

"'Hollow Passion' is derived from being involved in a night of infidelity that you weren't aware was taking place and in turn, being wrongly blamed for the entire encounter," explains Jacket Weather.

"We thought the best way to display this visually was to perform live in a studio so that the lister/ viewer could connect directly with the performance of the music and lyrics to better understand how they work together to project the pain and suffering that has been caused, whilst being strung up by a thick layer of funk rock."

Although 'Hollow Passion' is their newest release, the song began life during Melbourne's 2020 lockdown that also allowed the group to fine-tune and finesse the track into its final form.

"The recording process for 'Hollow Passion' (and the rest of the EP) was unique, as it was during the big lockdown in Melbourne back in 2020; we got to really take our time and finesse the track," the band says.

"Having as much time as we did, the song went through a few variations but eventually found its tight pocket in the form you hear it today.

"I think the real exciting moment from this recording was when Pistol was trying out some different guitar parts to fill out the chorus, and stumbled upon the off-beat stabs. . . they just add so much groove to the chorus and it was one of those real nice finishing touches on a track that we ended up all really falling in love with."

The group's new EP 'Fuel Light Glow' also marks the start of the band getting active on the live front. "The release of 'Hollow Passion' as a single is a really exciting moment for Jacket Weather," shares the band.

"It was always our intention that once we put this particular track out, it would kick the plan into gear. . . we're not short on music and we're itching to hit any stage we can get, so watch out for live shows and we'll catch you on the dance floor."

Jacket Weather play Sunsets Festival (Sydney) 3 December and Vic On The Park (Sydney) 23 December.
