Melbourne outfit Howlite return with new music in the form of the hauntingly beautiful 'Orchestra'.
After the successful releases of 2017 singles 'Gothic Romance' and 'Saviour', Howlite's latest offering is a powerful slice of piano-laden indie pop.
"I actually wrote 'Orchestra' nearly four years ago, but never fully realised the song, and it was something that had been floating around in limbo as an unfinished demo ever since," songwriter Alison Thom says.
"I felt that it was always missing something, that the song was waiting to be fixed, for someone to breathe new life into it.
"Ben, our bass player and guitarist, actually stumbled upon the demo late last year, and it was at that point that we decided to revisit the song as a group.
"As a band we pulled apart the song, re-structured it and re-imagined it. For me it felt like the song could finally be finished, that we could give the song a proper life of its own."
When it came time to record the single, the band knew what they wanted to achieve with the song's sound. "We knew that 'Orchestra' was going to need a big, robust sound, so we got in contact with the team at The Alamo studios," Alison says.
"We started working with producer Tyson Fish, who has worked with the likes of Children Collide, The Living End, Dropkick Murphys and Bad//Dreems.
"Straight from the moment we walked into the studio and saw their vintage NEVE recording console and walls of vintage gear, we felt at home. Tyson understood where the song had come from, where it was currently sitting, and where it needed to be taken.
"From that point onwards 'Orchestra' took on a life of its own, as we collaborated and developed the track with Tyson. We had discovered a new level of sound, and approaching it in this way symbolised a kind of closure to a certain time in my life."
'Orchestra' is officially released 6 April.
