Premiere: Stream Hillsborough's New Single 'Magnetic Lives'

Hillsborough are a Queensland-based alt. country, blues band.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

The pairing of Phil Usher and Beata Maglai, since 2016 Hillsborough have been peddling their own brand of alt. country/ blues at bars and festivals around Queensland.

Named after the region of Western Queensland that Usher's family has lived since the late 1800s, and slowly building their own catalogue of originals, Hillsborough have supported a host of acts including The Dandy Warhols and Tina Arena.

As chief songwriter, Usher has had his previous works featured on 'Gossip Girl', 'Bondi Rescue', and 'Underbelly'.

Earlier this year, Hillsborough released their debut single 'Trouble Finds Its Way' and have followed up with a couple more releases – 'A Message To Pretty' and 'Comin' Back For You' – that's building towards the pair's debut album (due next month).

Their latest release 'Magnetic Lives' is another serving of thoughtful, reflective outlaw country that meanders through bruised indie folk, the smooth, laidback instrumentation creating a sad cowboy nostalgia.

"I feel like this song could be the soundtrack to a dusk drive along a deserted dirt track way out west," Phil says.

"The lyrics explore the experiences, both good and bad, that bind us together as humanity and particularly how we are drawn to and bonded with certain people that walk through our lives at different times.

"For one reason or another – sometimes inexplicably – there is a chemistry or pull towards certain individuals we encounter during our time on this planet and at times these forces can be very strong and lasting."

Ahead of the song's release tomorrow (13 September), scenestr is thrilled to premiere 'Magnetic Lives' today. Enjoy.

"The song was recorded by Dan James at BBC Studios, mixed entirely on analogue equipment by Richie Belkner at Free Energy Device Studios, and is one of the first tunes we recorded for the album," adds Phil.

For their live shows, Phil and Beata are joined by Glen Russell (double bass) and Jonathan Pickvance (drums).
