Premiere: Stream Heavy Wax's New Single 'Ain't No Turning Back'

Heavy Wax are a funk-soul flavoured rock-pop band from Gold Coast.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Catchy pop-rock that breathes old-school funk and soul, Gold Coast roots group Heavy Wax's newest release is 'Ain't No Turning Back' – a track with a phat groove and warm tones sprinkled with the magic of a three-piece horn section.

After releasing two singles so far in 2021 ('Bourbon St. Swindler' and 'Clementine'), the group's newest track is their "most straight down the line but also the most polished" song they've released according to frontman Quin Samin, who was inspired by a former work colleague to write the song.

"The original idea for 'Ain't No Turning Back' came to me a few years back," Quin says. "I was working my day job with a colleague who always saw the negative side to everything to the point where it was almost comical.

"The lyrics ask questions to the person about where their headspace is at. I wanted the song to have a positive spin though, so in the third verse I challenge them to take a step back and take a look at the situation more positively. I guess it's a relatable topic for many people."

Ahead of the song's release tomorrow (16 July), scenestr is stoked to premiere 'Ain't No Turning Back' today. Enjoy.

Still in their infancy, Heavy Wax are inspired by music from the pre-digital age and recently performed at the 2021 Blues On Broadbeach festival.

"I thought this song didn't need horns in it, but I'm so glad we added them, they really bring an extra dimension and they are, after all, an essential part of the Heavy Wax 'sound'," adds Quin.

The recording of 'Ain't No Turning Back' also netted the band a new member. "When recording 'Ain't No Turning Back' we didn't have an official keyboardist, so we had Liam Kirk do the session for us.

"We hadn't met him before and when he heard the demo for the first time he said with a massive grin 'how cool is this groove'. By the end of the day, I think it's fair to say he became our unofficial keyboard player and has been with us ever since."

Heavy Wax play Burleigh Bazaar (Gold Coast) 16 July, Darwin Railway Club 29 July and Caloundra Music Festival (Sunshine Coast) 1 October.
