With more than 20 million worldwide streams on Spotify to date, 2019 has seen Canada-born, Byron Bay-based troubadour Garrett Kato play sold-out shows with Damien Rice, tour US-Canada with Ziggy Alberts and he has just returned from his first Euro-UK co-headline tour with Riley Pearce.
Now he is ready to unveil his next musical chapter with the new single 'Holding On To You', a modern ballad about "letting go".
With his smoky-honeyed vocals, hypnotic guitar strumming and a relaxed but bouncy beat, this is a slice of radio pop oozing indie charm. "The song's basic meaning is letting go of something or someone," explains Garrett.
"The verses I wrote on my iPhone while I was rather intoxicated. This method rarely works for me since I'm usually quite particular with my words, but in this instance the words almost felt like paint on a canvas with a more ambiguous meaning. It still had captured the emotion and feeling I was searching for, so I just kept it."
Ahead of the song's release tomorrow (25 October), Garrett has shared an exclusive stream of 'Holding On To You' with scenestr to premiere today. Your ears will thank you later.
Garrett – who is also a producer for the aforementioned Ziggy Alberts and Riley Pearce as well as fellow indie folk acts Kyle Lionheart and Pierce Brothers – will support Tash Sultana at her Sydney show in December as well as the SummerSalt festival dates (that Tash is headlining) in Adelaide and Perth.
