Sydney's post hardcore, indie alt-rockers Finding Better Health's newest single is 'Calypso', a track detailing the angst that can fester long after the breakdown of a relationship.
Industrial shoegazey post-hardcore that explodes in a sonic fury of white-noise alt-rock, 'Calypso' bubbles away before a piano hook enters the fray mid-song adding a melodic intensity to inspire closed-eyes, slow head-nodding.The song finally meanders to a close with a 40-50-second outro that concludes with a single piano stroke that gives some clarity to the intense feelings the song harbours.
"After being removed from my first serious relationship for some time, I came to the realisation that by constantly writing these bitter, vindictive songs, I was holding on to every negative emotion I ever felt," shares the band.
"Though this can be a cathartic process, I came to realise how much I had changed since that time, which prompted me to realise just how much my ex-partner must have changed.
"Yet here I was, years later, still writing songs about how f...ed up I was over the actions of an 18-year-old girl. It was a brutal realisation. I had become a bitter person."
Ahead of the song's release tomorrow (17 May), scenestr is stoked to premiere 'Calypso' today. Enjoy.
Finding Better Health teamed with Angie Watson who recorded the track at The Brain Studios as well as ARIA-nominated producer Clayton Segelov (Dear Seattle) who mixed and mastered the track.
"Bitter break-up songs are the mark of an immature man writing immature songs for immature men," adds the band.
"'Calypso' was the start of me growing up, of reckoning with my actions, instead of just yelling blindly about how hard-done by I was."
Finding Better Health launch 'Calypso' at The Factory Floor (Sydney) 2 June.
