Premiere: Stream Duxie Franklin's Debut EP 'Watch Your Soul'

Duxie Franklin's debut EP is titled 'Watch Your Soul'.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A multi-instrumental musical chameleon, dubbed the 'lovechild of Joni Mitchell and Frank Zappa' for her voice, folk stylings and idiosyncratic genre-fluidity, Melbourne-based Duxie Franklin prepares to release her debut EP, 'Watch Your Soul', this Friday (21 February).

The realisation of a three-year, cross-continental musical journey that has taken place across Hobart, Baltimore in the USA, and Duxie's current haunt of Melbourne, the collection of songs featured on 'Watch Your Soul' fuse together a modern-day Kate Bush mashed together with the odd-ball charm of Bjork and the alt-country, Americana musings of Gillian Welch.

"It's hard to believe the journey it's been from start to finish of this EP," beams Duxie.

"When I started out I had no clue the ride that I was in for; how much I would learn, how big a struggle it would be at times, or how great it would feel when I finally finished.

"I can't wait to let this work out into the world. I'm excited to see where the next project will take me."

Ahead of the EP's release on Friday across all digital platforms, scenestr is tickled pink to offer you an exclusive stream of 'Watch Your Soul' today. So brew yourself your fave tea, sit back and prepare to nod your head in appreciation; Duxie has that affect.

The recording and production of the EP took place with the help of Duxie's US mentor, Brian Simms; fellow student musicians in Hobart, Melbourne and Baltimore; and Amsterdam-based producer, composer and electronic artist, Nick Thayer. “Making this EP was intensely fun," Duxie says.

"I adore the production process – seeing a song take wings from its most basic form and evolving into something bigger than all of us. Music can have that transformative power."

Duxie Franklin supports Misha Bear at Northcote Social Club (Melbourne) 22 February. Duxie launches her EP at Grace Darling Hotel (Melbourne) 26 March.
