Two years removed from his previous studio album ('Views With A Room'), Sydney solo artist Declan Kelly returns with 'Headlock' – a song he wrote last year during the initial lockdown that offers a comforting shoulder to rest your pandemic-weary head on.
Smooth, soulful vocals and a breezy yet balmy melody underpin the attractiveness of 'Headlock', which breathes Marvin Gaye-Curtis Mayfield feels. As it slowly meanders along, its folk-roots character is a welcoming reassurance for the insecurities we're all facing as the pandemic shows no signs of ending.
"'Headlock' is one of those songs that wrote itself to be honest, and in the course of recording it I got to ride my pushbike in to my studio each day and see the empty streets," Declan says.
"All in the sense of the panic of the situation and the unease of a lockdown, loss of work and seeing the relentless of it all playing out in the media, 'Headlock' is a lockdown jam."
The first single from his forthcoming new studio album, Declan worked with Grammy-nominated producer Justin Stanley (Prince) who mixed 'Headlock'.
Ahead of its release tomorrow (13 August), scenestr is amped to premiere the music video for 'Headlock' (which features Declan riding his bike through the deserted streets of Sydney) today. Enjoy.
"Fight or flight is the central theme of 'Headlock', trying to figure out how we are to survive this pandemic," Declan adds.
