Darcy Kate's latest offering 'Songbird' showcases another side of the Sunshine Coast singer-songwriter's exceptional musical prowess.
Just the third single she's released (following her late 2020 debut 'Last Train To Frankston' and the bluesy-rock of 2021 single 'Run Away'), with 'Songbird' Darcy has penned a quaint folk ballad soaked in personal lyrics complemented by delicate vocals and a slow, finger-picking guitar that create plenty of emotive feels."I wrote 'Songbird' last year during the pandemic," Darcy says. "I wanted to write something as a reminder to myself to keep growing and pursuing what is important to me despite the barriers, fear, and dark times."
So personable was the song, Darcy even contemplated not sharing 'Songbird' with the world; luckily Darcy has some cluey mates who recognised the beauty she had created.
"This was a song that I never initially thought I would release, but after playing it for a few friends who connected with it, I decided to add it to the album.
"I hope it is a comfort to people during the hard days."
Ahead of the song's release on Friday (24 September), scenestr is stoked to premiere 'Songbird' today. Enjoy.
When it came to record the song, Darcy admits the intimate nature of the song required she enter the studio by herself only accompanied by her producer, Steve.
"We kept the arrangement delicate with influences from Katie Gray and Jewel. "Anna (from duo Anna and Jordan) added backing vocals, piano, and the strings later.
"It was one of the quickest songs to come together on the album."
Darcy and her band will perform at Lefty's Music Hall (Brisbane) as part of the Vacseen Project on 26 September and Noche De Brujas una fiesta (also at Lefty's Music Hall) 31 October.
