Crash & The Crapenters
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Sydney punk-rock band Crash & The Crapenters drill down into mental well-being and the incessant anxiety so prevalent in modern society on their new single, 'Depression'.

With three records in their arsenal since emerging in 2016, Crash & The Crapenters refer to 'Depression' – which will feature on the group's new EP 'Species Du Faeces' that lands in December – as 'Smells Like Middle Aged Spirit', as it subtly samples one of the most well-known songs of all time.

A juicy, bold bassline is drizzled atop atmospheric guitar that's flecked with '70s country-noir psych before the abrasive, cacophonous drumming is inserted, the song congealing into a garage-grunge burner before the vocals drop, adding an alternative art-rock vibe.

It's a maelstrom of sonic chaos, tangling and slithering across the different textures... it's sublimely moody, oozing equal parts lust and self-loathing as you're drawn deeper and deeper into a comforting blackness that's all too real.

"My hope is that people will hear it and think to themselves, 'this guy feels the way that I do on a day to day basis, and knowing that this guy feels like I do, makes me feel less alone'," shares songwriter Chris Carpenter, who has harnessed his own experiences with depression and anxiety.

Ahead of the song's release tomorrow (27 September), today scenestr is amped premiere 'Depression'. Enjoy.

"'Depression' is about the situation I found myself in a couple of years ago, coming out of the pandemic, going through a separation and just riddled. . . riddled," adds Chris, "with anxiety and depression, and wondering how my life had turned out the way it had.

"The 'Smells Like Middle Aged Spirit' comes from the fact that during that time I looked around and saw so many of my friends, people I know, sometimes even the people I'd never have expected to be living with mental illness, feeling the same way, going through the same things!

"Also, our track does borrow somewhat musically from a similarly titled song some people may have heard of!"
