With a hauntingly-crisp piano intro, Gold Coast artist COTTA showcases an impressive set of ethereal pipes on her debut single 'Wings', a song about being promised the world and given nothing.
The moniker of young composer Cassidy Mackie, 'Wings' is an impressive debut that highlights the Gold Coast as an emerging region for fostering talented artists. "Writing the song was a cathartic experience," COTTA says."It actually came as a melody across a 10-minute period; the entire first verse and chorus materialised in my head in minutes.
"I thought it was perfect and played it for a friend, who challenged me with the fact that initially 'Wings' afforded me all the blame for the breakdown of the relationship and left the song feeling too melancholy.
"'It's not 'screw you' enough!' he said. So the second verse was written the night before I was booked to record, and I think that makes 'Wings' special.
"It's not too 'woe is me', but also not too 'I wish I never met you'. There's an honest element to it that sometimes things that end are meant to end, and the memory can be equal parts awful and beautiful."
With the song produced by Josh Lovegrove, scenestr is stoked to premiere 'Wings' today. Enjoy.
"'Wings' feels to me like an overture played by the orchestra before a show begins," adds Cassidy. "It's simple, but powerful.
"It allows the listener to get familiar and comfortable with who COTTA is and how I write, before I start experimenting with producers and beats and all the wonderful things that make modern music what it is.
"It's a tribute to who I have grown up to be, and to the true magic of a simple song – almost like a lullaby – straight from the heart."
