DIY, abrasive, industrial indie punk-rock stylings melded to a hypnotic alt-pop rhythm section, Clique Petit's debut single 'Valium' is a pulsating ride that evokes comparisons to Iceage and Idles.
The solo project of Dil Harré (vocalist of Sydney emo-punk band dip), an Auckland born, now Sydney resident, Clique Petit says 'Valium' is a love song that quickly came together."Almost every layer on this song is a first take; the song poured out of me like any real irrational love does," Clique Petit says.
"The song is a love story based on Enmore Road, Newtown. It's about defying tarot cards, the velocity of little planets, and big insecurities to just adore someone."
scenestr is pumped to premiere 'Valium' today. Enjoy.
"Musically, I was looping 'Just Like Heaven' by The Cure the day before, so there's an overdose of new wave influence in there, and a healthy sprinkle of 'what would t.a.T.u. do?'," Clique Petit adds.
Despite its raw, DIY nature, 'Valium' retains a bedroom pop vibe that Dil was quick to mess around with.
"Because the melody I started with (the chorus vocal) sounded so pop, I found myself sabotaging every take in little ways. I do a similar thing with my life in general when things get too 'so fresh'."
Dil also found himself experimenting with everyday non-musical items to achieve the final sound of 'Valium'.
"The lead guitar part is played with a declining eftpos card as a pick and a BIC lighter as a slide. The whole thing was written, recorded, mixed and mastered on GarageBand within a few hours."
Given Sydney's current lockdown, Clique Petit has being forced to move his show at Garden Lounge to a virtual showcase via his Instagram (@cliquepetit) this Saturday night (3 July, 7pm). "My darlings Hunter from August Auzins and Orion Jennings will also be joining me."
