A surf rock, reggae artist from Wollongong, after spending his formative music years performing in punk rock bands Calcite has focussed on his solo work as a singer-songwriter.
A regular performer across Wollongong and the South Coast regions, last year he released his debut single 'Who Am I' followed by sophomore single 'Cavalry'. With two singles released so far in 2022 – 'Man On The Moon' and 'Dream Catcher' – Calcite's new song is titled 'Afraid Of Heights'.A delightfully playful xylophone melody opens the song that then melds into a buzzing, noodling guitar riff before reggae-flavoured drumming enters the frame as the song's rhythm sets sail across a glorious bed of spritely instrumentation.
Add Calcite's clear, warm vocal tones that give off an earthy feel and the musical element of 'Afraid Of Heights' offers a bright, upbeat mood. Though the lyrical direction of the song adds bite as Calcite muses about the fear to succeed coupled with social anxiety.
"I wanted to grasp the concept of being afraid to succeed. Lyrically I think it captures how it feels to be a performer with social anxiety quite well; it's like wanting to share music with the world, but you don't want any eyes on you."
The second half of the song also features an increased intensity in the instrumentation, Calcite expanding the sonic landscape with a bluesy guitar solo matched to crunchy, distorted drums you'll feel deep inside your gut.
Ahead of the song's release (14 December), scenestr is stoked to premiere 'Afraid Of Heights' today. Enjoy.
"'Afraid Of Heights' was inspired musically by the aspects of melodic dub reggae," adds Calcite. "I was stumped on what style to write this song too, then it all just flowed naturally once I created the trumpet melody."
