'Passionate about true crime docos, the Swannies, golf and sleep, I’ve been writing about music for 20-plus years. What I’ve learnt? There’s two types of music – good and bad.’

Melbourne's alternative punks Arabella and The Heist return with a new single that embraces electronic elements and dance beats while emboldening their chaotic energy.

The quartet of Holly Arabella (lead vocals), Joe Humphries (guitar), Luke Parker (bass) and Ryan Jones (drums), 'Ruckus' is Arabella and The Heist's first release of 2025.

Fuzzed, frantic energy opens the song, a doom-laden electronic sludge slithering while also cartwheeling across the dance floor. The beat is meaty, raucous, punk-flecked fun, igniting the senses as Holly's vocals maraud like a shield-maiden with a menacing intent.

The song definitely leans into early Prodigy, IDLES and WAAX feels with a strong sense of Alison Mosshart (The Dead Weather, The Kills) oozing through as well. By the time the song is at full speed, your neck will be snapping back and forth as your body braces for a frenzied dance-off as the chaos envelopes your being.

"We've been a punk band now for five years and we're so excited to be taking all that energy from the genre, and making a 'Ruckus' feels our own," Holly says.

Ahead of the song's release tomorrow (6 June), today scenestr is amped to premiere 'Ruckus'. Enjoy.

"The introduction of electronic elements and dance beats feels like a natural progression for us; we've always been about movement and introducing these sounds feels infectious," adds Holly.

"Lyrically the track is about carving out your own chaos, whatever that looks like. We're all little magnets for energy, we feel that at our live shows, so why not turn up the volume and move with the chaos."

With sold-out crowds for their 2024 'Electric' and '1769' single launches, and featured in line-ups at St Kilda Festival and Brunswick Music Festival this year, later this month the band will head off on an east-coast tour taking in Wollongong, Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Northern Rivers and Gold Coast.

"We had so much fun in the studio working with samples and electronic beats for 'Ruckus'," continues Holly. "There's so many rabbit holes to fall down. The track took nearly two months to get right. Felt so freeing working with new sounds."
