Adelaide singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Anya Anastasia welcomes 2022 with her new single, the Nordic-flavoured folktronica of 'Losing Wild'.
A primal, almost brutal yet enticing beat – created by the pluck of banjo strings combined with a drumming stomp – opens the song.It then melds into a sparkly, trip-hop electronic landscape reminiscent of 'Walkie Talkie'-era Air before the foreboding strumming returns, the intensity continually ramping up.
The yearning in Anya's vocals also draws you in with an eerie, bewitching charm that envelops the senses. There's Bjork, Kate Bush flavours throughout as well as hints of Fever Ray, Goldfrapp and Grimes.
"'Losing Wild' explores the idea that the loss of biodiversity diminishes human imagination," Anya says.
"The song suggests that the extinction crisis not only poses heartbreaking and planet-threatening external risks, but also heralds the end of good poetry and diminishment of playful minds.
"To find solutions, we all need to listen to our scientists whilst also engaging our imaginations."
Ahead of the song's release tomorrow (28 January), scenestr is thrilled to premiere 'Losing Wild' today. Enjoy.
"During the pandemic I think a lot of us took a deep dive into experiencing art, music, and quality movies for solace, for escape and for mental stimulation," adds the former cabaret star.
"I discovered amazing artists and songwriters from all around the world and from different eras.
"I realised my life was getting richer from me getting better at paying attention to things; getting better at active listening. Really letting a song take me somewhere, and listening to the detail.
"When life was busier I'd just skim or flick through things, or multitask and miss the detail, and I was starting to realise how much I had been missing.
"I wanted to take time to craft some music that offered this sort of detail and transportive qualities to anyone who might find themselves listening to it.
"I too, want to take people places (in the comfort of their own lounge rooms). I'm so excited to share this debut release, after such a long time spent building worlds to visit!"
