Indie artist Abbey Lane returns with her first release of 2025 with the poignant single 'Baby Steps' – a song about growth, perseverance and reflection.

After honing her craft for the previous decade-plus, last year Abbey released her debut EP 'Afterthoughts', working with ARIA Award-winning producer Dave Petrovic; the EP track 'Darling' winning Folk Song Of The Year at the ASA Awards.

With more new music on the way, Abbey commences her 2025 campaign with 'Baby Steps'. It's gleaming, yet laidback indie rock (slacker grunge) that's achingly beautiful, with honest-sounding vocals and raw, emotive songwriting, the pop tones melding to the rockier elements.

The song meanders yet never feels like it's aimless, Abbey's voice anchoring the song's heartfelt, earnest spirit as she sings about the pressures to conform to mainstream expectations.

Trying to make every breath here count /
Trying to wash away all my doubts /
Trying to make every day I'm living for right now

With a sound that can be easily compared to Middle Kids as well as Amy Shark, 'Baby Steps' offers a respite from everyday expectations, a three-minute sonic journey that reminds you to saviour the small wins in amongst the chaos of living life.

"It can be hard to motivate yourself to do things to better yourself," Abbey says, "so this track is all about making small changes to feeling better and acknowledging that you're making progress one small step at a time."

Ahead of the song's release tomorrow (3 April), scenestr is thrilled to premiere 'Baby Steps' today. Enjoy.

"'Baby Steps' took a slight different turn to my usual Aussie indie rock influences," shares Abbey. "I wanted to create a track that felt more vulnerable and raw, and took a lot of inspiration from indie folk-pop artists such as Beeson, Lawrence Lang and Holly Humberstone.

"I figured who better to mix the song than Ben Coleman, who mixed the Beeson EP which inspired the production on 'Baby Steps'!"

'Baby Steps' was a song that took a little nurturing before Abbey was happy to release it into the world. "This song was four years in the making, originally written back in 2021.

"The track took many lives while I fleshed out the possibilities with my producer, Alberto Suarez, reaching the final 'version eight', which feels like its truest self."

Abbey Lane plays The Vicar (Western Sydney) 25 April (free show) before supporting Aodhan at Pepe's On The Beach (Wollongong) 4 May.
