PNK FME Is Part Of Adelaide's Future Sounds

PNK FME
National Music Editor, based in Brisbane, Australia.
'Passionate about true crime docos, the Swannies, golf and sleep, I’ve been writing about music for 20-plus years. What I’ve learnt? There’s two types of music – good and bad.’

Adelaide home-based producer Lachlan Turnock is PNK FME, an artist influenced by Danny Brown, Rae Sremmurd, Skrillex and RL Grime.

Ahead of his upcoming performance at Futuresounds and Electro Live as part of Umbrella: Winter City Sounds, PNK FME has a chat about the local electronic scene.

For the uninitiated, tell us about PNK FME?
[PNK FME] The story of PNK FME really begins a long time ago, with me always having known what I wanted to do in life. It was definitely a scary move though, getting my music out into the world.

The Adelaide electronic scene is on the rise… how strong has the local networks become the last couple of years?
I cannot deny that the electronic music scene in Adelaide is definitely on the rise. I personally think it still has a little bit of growth to be properly recognised by the general public. All in all, it’s heading in the right direction.

There's a bucketload of local bands/ artists doing good things. That must be inspiring as a fellow Adelaidian?
I think it’s great. What other artists are achieving on a weekly basis has always inspired me to keep writing music and keep on getting better. I know this sounds like competition in a sense, but it’s much more an inspiration which I think is good to have sitting with you in the back of your mind. It keeps you going.

You'll be playing Futuresounds at Umbrella; what do you have planned?
I’ll definitely have some guests up with me, should I give them away... I can give one guest away as the song has been released! Eva Rundle will be there on the night to perform our wonderful collaboration ‘Creased’ and I will be debuting a lot of new work too.

You played Futuresounds last year; based on that experience, what can revellers expect from the 2017 edition?
A lot of entertainment. It almost feels like half of the Adelaide electronic music scene is there. It’s a lot of fun. And really stimulating for the brain’s enjoyment.

How important is a festival like Umbrella to invigorating the city during the colder, bleaker months of the year?
To be honest, it’s GREAT! And each year Umbrella: Winter City Sounds is growing really quite fast. Personally, I really love what they do. I think it’s giving the city an opportunity to show what it has to offer. It shows that our city is just as exciting all year around; not just at the start of the year.

Any new music on the horizon for PNK FME?
Yes, definitely. I have a lot of music coming in 2017/ 2018. I have already released ‘Fell For It (feat. Zephyr)’ and ‘Creased (feat. Eva Rundle)’, which are both part of an EP which I am currently mixing and mastering for release soon. I don’t want to give too much away about my newer tracks, but be prepared for some amazing content.

Was there a moment in your youth that you knew that music was going to be your future?
Yeah, definitely. I always felt compelled by the sound and expression of music. Music has and still does effect my world daily. I guess it was the moment when I started wanting to enjoy my life more and enjoy who I was and what I wanted to do; that’s when I decided to go for it.

Any words of advice for anyone contemplating a music career?
If you want to do something, whatever it may be, please go do it. Your life and you will change in many ways.

Next 12 months for you; what do you hope to achieve?
The next 12 months for me are looking pretty interesting. I definitely want to be become more established in the electronic music scene in Australia and start getting my music out to other states. Also, as I said, there’s going to be a lot of new music coming out!

Adelaide or Port Adelaide?
Is this really a question.... Adelaide always!

PNK FME plays Futuresounds VII Festival at Crown & Spectre (Adelaide) 15 July and Electro Live (Adelaide) at Cinema Place Canopy 19 July. Both events are staged as part of Umbrella: Winter City Sounds.
