Ending months of speculation, Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars has confirmed his band will tour Australia next March.

"We talked about it yesterday and we're [touring] for sure in March," Mars told triple j. "The whole month is clear for us so we'll be enjoying some Australian sun then."

The tour will almost certainly be presented by Live Nation, who yesterday tweeted about a "BIG tour announcement next week" with a picture of the Phoenix Military Band.

Mars was on the phone to the station to premiere the R. Kelly remix of 'Trying To Be Cool', the standout track from the band's Bankrupt! LP.

The collaboration came about after Kelly's cameo during Phoenix's Coachella set, a moment Mars recounted for triple j in glorious detail.

"He sings about believing he can fly, but he does not fly," Mars said. "He takes his tour bus... which was stuck in traffic when we got on stage... so we were nervous that when the music started and he was supposed to come onstage, he wouldn't show up.

"There was a brief moment where we thought: 'What should we do now? It's not gonna happen.' And then suddenly the smell of cigar came onstage, and a giant gold diamond microphone showed up. And there he was."
