Perth International Jazz Festival 2021 Programme

Danillo de Paz and Perth Choro

Perth International Jazz Festival (PIJF) is bigger and more varied than ever in 2021.

The 2021 event brings new performance spaces, added free community events and an expansion into Busselton. It will offer the best for music lovers of all kinds, with performances catering to jazz purists all the way to those keen on the jazz-influenced sounds of funk, Latin, hip hop and beyond.

The celebrations get underway with a free event at State Theatre Centre featuring live sets from Dr Richard Walley’s Six Seasons with Junkadelic Orchestra, Daniel Susnjar’s multi award-winning Afro Peruvian Jazz Group, and a live-streamed performance direct from Amsterdam by Tin Men and the Telephone, presenting a spicy combination of jazz tunes and technology called ‘GREATEST Show’.

PIJF’s hub for ticketed shows – The Rechabite – will host Cotton Club Dance Party featuring the OZ Big Band, with high 1920s energy swing to keep you bopping all night.

National guests showing up across the weekend include Adelaide multi-instrumentalist Adam Page – best know for his multi-instrumental looping performances (and recording of sounds for ‘The Hobbit’ films), improvisers Scott Tinkler and Julius Schwing from Bruny Island, Tasmania, and funky Adelaide dance trio Er@ser Description.

Other Rechabite highlights include a celebration of ‘WA’s First Lady Of Jazz’ Helen Matthews by Ali Bodycoat and Libby Hammer; and jazz saxophonist Jamie Oehlers presents the music of John Coltrane, with Ben Vanderwal on drums, Zac Grafton on bass and Harry Mitchell on piano.

More venues have been added including Cathedral Square and a Secret Rooftop in the CBD. ‘Grooves N Brews’ at Northbridge Piazza will be transformed into an outdoor bar starring artists like Liquid Project, Supathick, Trisk & Optamus Present: Prime Time and the Flewnt Boorloo Block Party.

“There’s so much music to enjoy across the Perth weekend and then at the Busselton Amphitheatre on the Foreshore the following Saturday. Come play! Take a risk with us and see as much music as you can,” Festival Director Dr. Mace Francis says.

“Experience new delights, reacquaint yourself with old favourites, and just have the best time. This festival is for YOU, and we look forward to seeing you there, from a safe distance.”
