Considered to be a pioneer of the djent movement within progressive metal, Periphery are coming back to Australia to tour their latest album.
“I love going to Australia, we always have a blast when we go there, and we are going there with some really good friends and we have some really good friends there,” guitarist Jake Bowen says.
This tour will feature Periphery and the Devin Townsend Project; a combination Bowen is positive fans will enjoy. “I feel fans of one will enjoy the other, if they haven't heard the other band yet – we share a fan base in some sense, so it is a solid line-up for fans of this style of music.” Devin Townsend has long been part of the progressive, heavy metal scene, having recorded 20 studio albums with his various bands and projects.
Periphery will be touring their double album, 'Juggernaut: Alpha And Omega', a concept album that was several years in development. “Initially it wasn't going to be a double record, it was going to be just under 80 minutes, but we when we brought the final product to our label, they were like it is just a little too long to sit on a disc comfortably with all the meta data and all the other things, so we decided to split it up. We found the right point to divide it up and make it two complete ideas and it worked out – it was a very fortunate circumstance.”
Bowen says he feels 'Juggernaut...' is the best album the band have produced. “It is going to be kind of difficult to top it.” Periphery self-produced 'Juggernaut...', as they have done for all their albums. “I think recording is a therapeutic thing for a lot of us, it also hones our skills, and keeps our tools sharp.”
The members of Periphery did toy with the idea of getting a producer for this release. “After lots of discussing and testing it out, we weren't getting the results we were after. So we were like why don't we just self produce, I am sure we can do it if we put our minds to it. Sure enough we came out with the product that we wanted to come out with.”
Bowen is excited to be touring Australia again, remarking on how each tour he likes seeing all the familiar faces in the crowds. “In Australia, every venue we have played has been outstanding ... they are on different level to what we have been touring in the States just on a general level, because I would say you have more good venues than bad venues.”
