Pandora Shuts Down Australian Services

Music streaming platform Pandora has announced it will discontinue its Australian operation following the departure of CEO and founder, Tim Westergren.

The decision comes some six months after the resignation of Managing Director Jane Huxley in what's now being viewed as an early indicator of the company's lagging viability in a local market dominated by Spotify.

With 80 million users globally, 1.2 million of which are Australian, Pandora is the latest streaming platform to shut in Australia with Guvera folding in 2016 and Deezer in 2017.

The move also leaves in doubt major commercial partnerships with Woolworths for their in-store radio service and Rolling Stone Australia for running branded playlists of the artists featured in their magazines.

Two weeks prior to Wetsergren's departure, satellite radio subscription service Sirius XM Holdings Inc. invested $480 million for a 19 per cent stake granting them three of the nine seats on the board.
